Today, August 9th is International Indigenous Peoples Day. Established by the United Nations in 1994, this day recognizes the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples around the world. It falls on the anniversary of the UN’s first meeting on Indigenous issues in 1982 and serves as an important reminder to honor the voices, traditions, and identities of Indigenous communities that have too often been marginalized.
As Italian Americans, we understand the importance of being seen and respected. In 1937, Columbus Day became a national holiday at a time when Italian immigrants were still viewed with suspicion and faced widespread discrimination. Columbus became more than a historical figure. He became a symbol of our community’s resilience, dignity, and belonging. That day helped affirm our place in the American story.
Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day were created in different eras, for different reasons, but they reflect a shared truth: culture, identity, and contribution matter. Indigenous peoples have played a central role in shaping this land, long before the founding of the United States, and their traditions and wisdom continue to shape it today. Supporting Indigenous Peoples Day is about listening, learning, and showing respect for that ongoing legacy.
Both Indigenous and Italian American communities have faced struggles for acceptance. Both have fought to preserve their heritage. And both have made lasting contributions to the country we all share.
These two days are not in conflict. They are part of the same American fabric. They represent different threads, each strong, each proud, each essential.
We support the full and respectful observance of Indigenous Peoples Day. We remain committed to preserving Columbus Day, which continues to hold deep meaning for generations of Italian Americans.
Together, these two days remind us that honoring heritage and telling the full story of America go hand in hand.
