Words Matter

We now know that words, powerful, hateful words, speak louder than actions.

Words matter.

The recent hateful attack at Central Synagogue is a painful reminder of the rampant antisemitism that exists in New York City and our country.

But this cancer starts with words. Our leaders have a profound responsibility. They must understand that their words matter and influence the dangerous division in our country.

Must tragedy have to convince us that we need to stand up in a moral and common sense way to influence those who do not see the effect of their destructive words and the ugly consequences?

We all have the right to differences of opinions and an exchange of views and ideas to have our voice heard to change the mindset of those who disagree with us.  That does not give us the right to attack those who we want to influence or protest with violence. We cannot excuse this extremism as a way of accomplishing our personal goals of having our voice heard and followed.

Antisemitism is antihumanism, a plight on our very being. It cannot be acceptable and all of us must take responsibility to counter this ugly attack.

There is no place for hate in our world.  Once you offend one religion, one ethnicity or culture and what they believe in you offend all.

Italian Americans must stand up to this bigotry and preserve the principles that we believe in. Yes we will be approaching the Fall season and our community will unfortunately once again be challenged by those who will disrespect our support of Christopher Columbus. We will proudly remain strong in our support, and hopefully those who may disagree will be civil and respect our community.

Words matter. Let’s hope and pray that all of us realize that we have a responsibility of choosing our words well, with respect for all.
